![]() ![]() I feel that based on how Graff’s article goes, students should have some type of discussion, better in small groups, on some type of street smart topic – that is, argue about rap music in the way they don’t argue about poetry. Up to this point, I’m maybe twenty minutes-half an hour into my lesson on Graff. Graff points this out: “This is why educational problems are not solved by junking traditional subjects in favor of courses on sports, cars, fashions, and rap music, though it is foolish to resist introducing such subjects if they figure to hook students who otherwise will tune out academic work entirely.” Unfortunately, transferability needs to be added so students can see the connection between the book smart and street smart topics – that they are the same thing. Graff continues, “Kids who argue with passion about rock bands don’t necessarily see the point of arguing about a Shakespeare sonnet, a social or psychological theory, or the mind-body problem.” But if these book smart topics can be integrated into the classroom, students can learn without realizing it. I’d ask students to provide me with three scenarios where statistical-based questions can be asked and then to outline nine questions for each scenario. This exercise might begin in the same way as my earlier assignment where I gave students categories to brainstorm questions to. I would want students to add their own topics and discuss how these topics contain what might be seen as academic content. What other topics are possible: “parental authority, dress fashions, soap operas, teen entertainment idols, weight, personal appearance.” Whereas schoolwork seemingly isolated you, you could talk sports with people you had never met. Furthermore, sports arguments, debates, and analyses made you part of a community, not just of your friends but of the national public culture. Yet sports were full of challenging arguments, debates, problems for analysis, and meaningful statistical math in a way that school conspicuously was not. Graff primarily focuses on sports (and I want to have students realize this topic, especially since a lot of them may be sports fans). How can we apply book smart concepts to street smart situations? I’ve blogged on such examples like road trips, music, dating, but there are other hopefully endless possibilities. I agree with Graff’s basic thesis and strive to integrate street smart / real world experiences into the classroom. Summary after any type of quotation is important: Graff is arguing that society promotes an anti-intellectual bias while at the same time viewing intellectualism as the paradigm of what is smart. We tend to assume that intellectual distinction can be manifested only with bookish subject matter-that is, that it’s possible to wax intellectual about Plato, Shakespeare, the French Revolution, and nuclear fission, but not about cars, clothing fashions, dating, sports, TV, or Bible Belt religion-and we thereby overlook the intellectualism latent in supposedly philistine pursuits. Starting with a basic thesis sentence (which is rather long), Graff explains: Who do you think is the intended audience of this piece, and why?.What did you learn if anything? What new information did you find interesting?.Difficult to read parts – pick one or two or three to focus on and give it a try to explain, or what are you confused about?.What did you disagree with? How do you respond to this disagreement?.What type of support is being used? How effective is it? Support outline: focus on how the writer supports his or her essay.Topic sentence summary outline: the first sentence of each paragraph generally tells you what the paragraph is about. What purposes does the introductory paragraph serve?.See some of the approaches and suggestions that follow. Provide an adequate summary of the essay in less than 100 words.Look at the title of the essay – Why did the author title the essay as he/she did?.To repeat the guidelines for metacommentary: Like with all reading assignments, I want students to metacomment. (I do want to ask, however, whether learning and a rhetorical situation are the same). ![]() Graff looks at street smarts (that is, knowledge learned from everyday exposure to rhetorical situations – how to handle one’s self, basically) as another type of rhetorical situation. ![]() Like with Rose’s article which looks at blue collar occupations as rhetorical situations. Like with Mike Rose’s “Blue Collar Brilliance,” Graff argues that learning does occur outside of academic contexts, his specific thesis comparing book smarts and street smarts. Another text that was recommend to me by a colleague for the new curriculum we are working on is Gerald Graff’s “Hidden Intellectualism” (which ironically is not in the new textbook, I think). ![]()

As in the previous games, villager AI can be a bit dreadful at points. Kingdom Two Crowns: Norse Lands does come with its fair share of frustrations, though. It also feels like areas are cleared of foliage a lot faster once you've chopped down the trees, which lets you build walls quicker and get that little bit of extra expansion before night rolls around. It costs more, but this means you can still recruit new villagers even after you've expanded your borders and flattened the camps. One welcome change, however, is that the drifter camps where you recruit villagers can now be rebuilt as houses after you've cleared them. There are also the usual architects who you can recruit and bring back to your town to build better farms and towers. I couldn't get them to work, personally, but I've been reliably informed that they can grant you god-like abilities to use against the Greed, representing the favour of that deity. While riding through the Norse Lands on your flashy new steed, you might also spy some of the new puzzle monuments. The chariot is my personal favourite since it gets a speed boost that sends it rocketing across the map, though I was disappointed that you can't use this to mow down the Greed as well. In terms of other additions, there are plenty of fun new mounts, including a Lynx-drawn chariot, a reindeer, and a nightmarish horse that can set the ground behind it on fire. You have to recruit a worker for three coins, then turn them into a Berserker for a further six-and this warrior might not even last the night. But while these warriors can plough through the Greed, similar to Shogun's ninjas, they lack the self-preservation to be cost-effective. It wouldn't be a Viking-themed game without Berserkers, either. This change means that Norselands is more about shifting borders and battlelines, as the Greed smash your cheapo barriers while you attempt to rebuild them before the next night's attack. As always, the soundtrack and visuals are both excellent. This means that if a barrier falls, they retreat in a defensive formation to the previous one-a great change from the original, where you'd be liable to lose a great deal if the Greed ever broke through. When you expand your realm and citadel far enough, you can even equip them with shields. Norse Lands makes up for this by allowing every villager to fight. First off, your barriers are much weaker since, historically, the Vikings built mainly with wood. What Norselands offers is a game that utilises Two Crown's existing formula while providing an alternate playstyle based on its Viking theme. As you might have guessed, this expansion is themed around Vikings and sees us swap the bamboo jungles of Shogun, and the blasted hellscape of Deadlands, for lush pine forests and bearded men with axes. But now we're taking a trip northwards with Kingdom Two Crowns: Norse Lands. This formula has served Two Crowns well in both its base version and its two expansions: Shogun and Deadlands. ![]() There are few tutorials in Two Crowns, so you're left to muddle through yourself-to play around with that weird monument in the forest, to work out how to get the materials to build better defences, or to find a way to get off your island. The world may seem simple but, again, it conceals hidden layers. By day you restore your realm, but by night, monsters known as the Greed come to steal everything you've worked on. As you explore the mysteries of the world with your trusty steed in tow, a relaxing soundtrack lulls you into a sense of security-farmers farm, hunters hunt, and your way of life persists.īut Two Crowns is, unsurprisingly, a game of two sides. The inherent simplicity of the side-scrolling strategy game fits the platform perfectly, as you ride the length and breadth of your realm, tapping to give gold and build yourself a worthy king or queendom. Even if they weren't originally released on the platform, some games are just made for mobile. ![]() ![]() ![]() For more on the new movies coming to Netflix this year, check out the Netflix 2022 Film Slate here. This study demonstrates that rare phenomena such as frostquakes can be identified and assessed using data gathered through social media. We critically assess the use of social media as an observation network including the possibility of false positives and population bias. Frostquakes were most frequently heard at nighttime. Two frostquake clusters were identified, one in and around the Greater Toronto Area and the other in eastern Wisconsin. In the United States, the reports came from states bordering the Great Lakes and the New England areas. ![]() Results showed that in central Canada, frostquake occurrences ranged from Windsor, Ontario to the west to Montreal, Quebec to the east and from Niagara Falls, Ontario to the south to North Bay, Ontario to the north. ![]() In total, six more episodes of frostquakes as well as their locations were identified in January and February of 2014. Using meteorological metrics, we were able to forecast two subsequent frostquake events in January 2014 that coincided with reports on social media. These occurrences became the first large-scale documented frostquakes in Canada. These were identified as a rare phenomenon called cryoseism, or more commonly known as frostquakes. They are most common in the upper Midwest and northeast, locations susceptible to some of the most extreme temperature swings during the winter.Following the ice storm of December 2013 in southern Ontario, the general public heard noises that resembled falling trees and reported these occurrences on social media. Ice quakes are generally harmless, but in rare instances the have caused damage to structural foundations or caused light shaking of the earth similar to a low-end earthquake. The expansion exerts pressure on the frozen soil and rocks around it, which cause a loud crack or boom sound to reverberate around a fairly localized area. The water in the soil mixed with the rapidly dropping temperatures turns the water to ice, which expands in the process. The soil also needs to be fairly saturated with water, which was definitely the case after the large amount of snow melt. The temperature drop is not the only precursor to an ice quake, though. Ice quakes occur when temperatures quickly drop to frigid levels following several days of temperatures above freezing. ![]() These booms, or strange cracking noises, were likely the result of something called ice quakes or frost quakes. As the temperatures dropped there were reports of loud cracks and booms across West Michigan on the morning of Feb. ![]() ![]() ![]() However the block size can vary depending on the version and manufacturer, so it’s best to check the specific details of any set you are interested in before purchase in order to ensure the size meets your expectations. The vocal distortion on Burnham's voice in this song makes him sound like the manifestation of depression, a force that's trying to convince us to sink into the comfort of inertia. The notion that, despite understanding how being stuck inside a room (or your own head) isn't good for your wellbeing, it becomes a comfortable type of sadness - a state that you often find yourself crawling back to when the world becomes too overwhelming to bear. This seemingly simple rhyme captures a complicated mental cycle that people who experience depression, anxiety, or other mental disorders will know all too well. Went out to look for a reason to hide again." Then comes the gut-punch, a line that echoed in my head for days after I watched this special: "Well, well, look who's inside again. It's one of the times that you feel like Burnham isn't putting on a character, but is singing from the depths of his vulnerable inner-self. He goes from describing the efforts of creating the very special we're watching ("trying to be funny and stuck in a room") to poignantly summarizing the experience of a teenager who feels trapped ("I was a kid who was stuck in his room"). This prompts Burnham to pull-rank on Socko, brow-beating him back into submission before he rips the puppet off his hand anyways, showing us once again "how the world works" between the ruling classes and the oppressed.Īnother of the shorter songs in the special, "Look Who's Inside Again" manages to be one of the most profound pieces of music Burnham writes. When Burnham's character laments that he was just "trying to be a better person," Socko exasperatedly says: "Why do you rich f- white people insist on seeing every socio-political conflict through the myopic lens of your own self-actualization?" This is best displayed in the bit where Socko tells Burnham to go read a book if he wants to learn more about how "the simple narrative taught in every history class is demonstrably false and pedagogically classist." In "How the World Works," Burnham sets his character up as a stand-in for ignorant white idealists, while his puppet Socko takes on the role of non-white Americans. While Teeuwen's sock-puppet stand-up routine is all about an absurd, codependent relationship between puppet and master, Burnham's puts a new spin on the idea. The premise of this song comes from one of Burnham's favorite comedians, Hans Teeuwen.
